Instructions for Tying a Nail Knot
Prepare a Nail or Tube:
Use a nail, needle, or small tube (like a straw or hollow pen) to help tie the knot. Place the tube parallel to the end of the fly line.
Align the Leader:
Lay the leader alongside the fly line with the ends overlapping. Ensure you have enough tag end to work with for the wraps.
Start Wrapping:
Take the tag end of the leader and make 5-7 wraps around both the fly line and the tube. Hold the wraps in place with your fingers as you work.
Thread the Tag End:
After completing the wraps, thread the tag end of the leader through the tube or alongside the nail, and then carefully remove the tube or nail while holding the wraps in place.
Tighten the Knot:
Moisten the knot with water or saliva to reduce friction and ensure a smooth tightening process.
Slowly pull on both ends of the leader to tighten the wraps snugly around the fly line. Make sure the wraps remain neat and even.
Secure the Knot:
Once the knot is tightened, trim the tag ends of the leader and fly line close to the knot, leaving a small amount to prevent slippage.
Your nail knot is now tied and ready for fishing. This knot provides a secure and streamlined connection, making it ideal for attaching fly line to leader or joining different types of fishing lines. Its slim profile ensures it passes smoothly through the rod guides, making it a reliable choice for fly fishing.
