Step-by-Step Guide to Tying an FG Knot

The FG knot is a favorite among anglers for its strength and slim profile, making it ideal for connecting braided line to a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you master this essential knot.

Step 1: Prepare Your Lines

• Braided Line: Hold the braided line in one hand.
• Leader Line: Hold the fluorocarbon or monofilament leader in the other hand.

Step 2: Wrap the Braided Line

1. Position: Hold the leader line taut.
2. Wrap: Begin wrapping the braided line around the leader line, making sure each wrap is tight and lays next to the previous one. Aim for about 20 wraps.

Step 3: Secure the Wraps

1. Hold the Wraps: Pinch the wraps between your fingers to keep them in place.
2. Lock the Wraps: Using the tag end of the braided line, make a half hitch around the leader and the main line. Pull it tight.

Step 4: Repeat Half Hitches

1. Continue: Make another half hitch with the braided line around both the leader and main line.
2. Tighten: Pull the half hitch tight to further secure the wraps.

Step 5: Trim the Leader Tag End

1. Cut: Trim the leader tag end as close to the wraps as possible without cutting the wraps themselves.

Step 6: Final Half Hitches

1. Separate the Lines: Separate the braided main line and leader.
2. Secure: Make several half hitches with the braided tag end around just the braided main line.
3. Finish: Pull each half hitch tight to secure the knot.

Step 7: Tighten the Knot

1. Pull Tight: Hold the main lines of both the braid and the leader and pull them in opposite directions to tighten the knot fully.

Step 8: Trim the Braided Tag End

1. Trim: Cut the braided tag end close to the knot.
